RESONANCE

10 May - 10 August 2026

RESONACE

West Eden is excited to announce the debut solo exhibition RESONANCEby South Korean multimedia artist Julie H.C. and curated by Camilla Russell. The series of artworks on view from June 10th to August 10th, 2026, analyze traditional textile history through the subversive lens of Found object art, notably Post-War Assemblage that embraced discarded materials and rebirthed them into dynamic fresh narratives. Through a contemporary aesthetic, the compositions are made up of found fabrics repurposed into sculptural shapes and forms, materials that ebb and flow with their own life force upon the canvas. The visceral experience is akin to a spiritual awakening, for this exhibition is the artist’s personal journey navigating through ancestral nuances and individual autonomy.

Working primarily with antique Jim Thompson textiles for RESONANCE,  Julie H.C.  explores the contrasting nature of what is familiar vs. what is foreign, as seen throughout her study of textile history and contemporary feminist ideology. In this exhibition she shines light upon Thailand’s handicraft heritage and silk legacy.  Drawing from a cross-cultural life shaped between Korea, Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, her artistic language reflects a sensitivity to both heritage and modernity.

The fabrics are all sourced from archival collections selected for their unique characteristics and engaging visual stories, while the fans reference womanhood and female autonomy. Throughout history the fan motif has been seen as inherently feminine.  In RESONANCE, however, the fan is celebrated for its quiet enduring presence, accentuating the textiles’ soft rhythm and fluidity—a Yin and Yang duality that pulsates throughout the works. The artist uses Polyurethane and nylon threads to create the fabrics’ kinetic effect, further instilling each work with an invisible tempest.

“The fan, specifically, resonates with me because of its history in the Korean Joseon Dynasty. Back then, a fan wasn't just an object, it was a symbol of rank and a canvas for scholars to showcase refinement through poetry and landscapes. I realized these ancient Korean art forms were already embedded in my mind. The fan has naturally become my “board of expression”, the bridge between my heritage and my current work”, she said.

The title of the exhibition was inspired by the artist’s childhood growing up in Korea and North America, two countries seemingly polar opposites, and yet together created within her memory a special symphony vibrating with valuable moments and sacred connections. It is these emotions that she aspires to recreate within the artworks—the pursuit of harmony reverberating throughout all individuals’ hearts and souls. Where beauty exists, subsequently becoming a shared concerto rich with textures, revelations, and new ways of seeing.

Championing sustainability and female education, parts of the profits from RESONANCE will be donated to Inspiring Girls Thailand, a non-profit organization that supports young girls from underserved communities to pursue their creative ambitions.  For more information please go to their website https://www.inspiring-girls-th.com/
